Joseph Young and family present From Enslavement to Empowerment: A Musical Performance, in which they recount their family’s journey from slavery to today. From Enslavement to Empowerment chronicles the age-old tradition of using agriculture for economic uplift, collective agency, and cultural preservation.

Joseph is an educator and farmer from King and Queen County, Virginia. As the descendant of conjin' docs, sharecroppers, and clergy folk, he honors his ancestors by emulating their practices, accomplishments, tenacity, and ideologies.

Joseph also uses this ancestral knowledge to maintain his family's operation: Mothers' Gardens Farm. In doing so, he continues the age-old tradition of using agriculture for economic uplift, collective agency, and cultural preservation.
